The Xantrex Trace C40 is truely a workhorse of a charge controller -- in use for many years, it has proven itself to be very reliable. For smaller systems, which don't warrant the extra cost of a MPPT controller, this is the charge controller we recommend. The break even point seems to be around 600 watts -- that is, the boost provided by Maximum Power Point Tracking with a PV array of less than 600 watts is less than the extra power that same amount of money would produce if invested in another PV module. The C40 is a 3-stage (plus equalization) PWM charge controller that can be used in 12 to 48VDC systems. It can also be used as DC load control (low or high voltage disconnect) or DC diversion regulator. Optional temperature sensor optimizes battery charging. Two year factory warranty.
